Ukraine remains at the center of extremely complex military-political and security events. On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the attention of the entire country is focused on countering the systematic air strikes of the occupation forces, strengthening the defense capabilities of the enclave, and diplomatic steps to support the defense sector. Russian troops launched a series of targeted missile and air strikes on Odessa, Donetsk region, and border infrastructure, causing the destruction of housing and civilian infrastructure. At the same time, the Defense Forces are holding the borders, and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an important diplomatic visit to Poland after a series of meetings in the United States. Current situation in Ukraine and key events of the day
According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and regional military administrations, on July 29, intense work continues along the entire front line and in front-line regions to contain the enemy and eliminate the consequences of shelling.
During the day, the enemy attacked civilian and infrastructure facilities in Odessa, where the infrastructure, private and multi-storey residential sectors were damaged as a result of missile strikes, as well as in the Donetsk region (in the village of Rayhorodok), where there were deaths and injuries, including children, due to strikes on residential buildings. In the border areas of Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkiv regions, the use of various types of drones and guided aerial bombs (GABs) by the Russians is recorded.
At the same time, Ukrainian forces are inflicting symmetrical and asymmetrical strikes on the aggressor’s logistics – in particular, the occupiers’ UAV depots in Donetsk were hit and another successful strike on the enemy’s strategic facilities was confirmed. Over the course of 24 hours, the Armed Forces of Ukraine neutralized over 1,300 occupiers, destroyed 60 artillery systems and about 1,470 UAVs.
In the international sector, a key event was the meeting between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk in Lublin during the return of the Ukrainian delegation from the U.S. The parties discussed strengthening military logistics, security guarantees, and coordination of actions within NATO defense programs.
“Ukraine continues to build a flexible defense and diplomatic strategy. Symmetrical strikes on enemy warehouses and logistics, combined with the development of decentralized life support systems in rear and border cities, are the key to our resilience,” notes regional security analyst Oleksiy Sergiyenko.
Analysis of systemic challenges and risks for the regions of Ukraine
The duration of hostilities, the short distance of enemy aircraft to border and coastal cities, as well as the aggressor’s attempts to destroy the energy and logistical framework determine a number of systemic risks for all of Ukraine.
The first factor remains the high threat of targeted combined air attacks using ballistic and cruise missiles, cruise missiles, and strike UAVs against critical infrastructure facilities, energy hubs, and civilian residential areas.
The second factor is the need for constant protection and fortification of the state border and front-line zones in the northern, eastern, and southern directions to counter enemy shelling and attempts by sabotage and reconnaissance groups to break through.
The third problem is the increased load on utility networks, the power system, and the social sphere of rear regional centers due to the reception of internally displaced persons and the need to immediately prepare for the connection of autonomous power sources before the next heating season.
“Thanks to the development of distributed generation, the installation of cogeneration units, and the strengthening of civil protection, Ukrainian cities are building a sustainable utility system capable of functioning even in the event of emergency calls in the unified energy system,” emphasizes infrastructure projects expert Mykhailo Doroshenko.
Practical recommendations for residents of Ukraine
Response to alarms: promptly go to shelters when an air raid alarm is announced, or when there is a threat of ballistics, CABs, or strike UAVs.
Border and coastal security: strictly adhere to regime restrictions in the border zone and coastal areas, carry identification documents, and comply with the requirements of the military and law enforcement officers.
Autonomy and supplies: create the necessary supply of drinking and technical water at home for at least 3–5 days and regularly renew autonomous power sources (power banks, charging stations, flashlights).
Information hygiene: adhere to strict information quarantine and categorically refrain from filming and publishing on the Internet the actions of air defense forces, hit sites, movements of military equipment, or locations of critical infrastructure facilities.
