The previous fight between the Ukrainian absolute champion Oleksandr Usyk and the Dutch king of kickboxing Rico Verhoeven will forever go down in history as a classic confrontation of two completely different sports philosophies. The K-1 star’s attempt to conquer the heights of professional boxing created a huge excitement, as experts and fans sought to see if pure boxing technique could withstand incredible anthropometry, heavy pressing and specific experience of hard clinchers. The fight fully justified its status, turning into an exciting chess game, where every move could be decisive.
As reported by Channel 34, a thorough tactical analysis of that confrontation clearly demonstrates the total superiority of the classical boxing school. Despite the frantic initial onslaught of the Dutch giant, Oleksandr Usyk managed to coolly implement his fight plan, break his opponent’s strategy, and prove that speed of thinking and filigree footwork carry much more weight than a brute strength advantage.
The course and key stages of the previous match
From the first seconds of the opening round, Rico Verhoeven tried to make the most of his size and weight advantage. He confidently moved forward, trying to force a dirty fight on Usyk at close range and wear down the Ukrainian with constant pressure in the clinch. In the first three minutes, the Dutchman managed to pin Oleksandr several times near the ropes, but the Ukrainian champion’s defensive block worked flawlessly, minimizing any damage from his opponent’s powerful blows.
Starting from the fourth round, the pattern of the fight changed dramatically, as Usyk completely miscalculated the timing and sweeping amplitude of Verhoeven’s attacks. Thanks to his phenomenal speed and trademark “shuttle”, the Ukrainian boxer began to easily pierce his opponent’s defense with rapid series of jabs and crosses. Oleksandr constantly twisted the Dutchman to the left, forcing him to helplessly miss and rapidly lose strength. By the final championship rounds, Rico had noticeably slowed down due to numerous missed punches and enormous fatigue, which allowed Usyk to completely dominate the ring and win a crushing victory on points by unanimous decision of the judges.
Systemic factors of the dominance of the Ukrainian champion
The main reason for Oleksandr Usyk’s success in the first meeting was his unique boxing intelligence. Verhoeven, accustomed to the specifics of kickboxing, had a too wide stance and invested in each individual blow, which made his actions predictable for an elite master. Usyk instantly saw the beginning of each opponent’s attack and outpaced him due to the perfect sense of distance and lightning-fast counter combinations.
The Ukrainian’s trademark endurance also played an important role. While the Dutch fighter wasted energy on chaotic pressing, Oleksandr rationally distributed his forces, increasing the density of blows from round to round. Constant work on the floors – alternating quick series to the head with heavy blows to the body – completely disoriented Verhoeven and deprived him of the opportunity to conduct at least one dangerous attack in the second half of the fight.
Recommendations for fighters on countering larger opponents
When preparing for a fight against an opponent who significantly exceeds you in height and strength, coaches advise you to categorically avoid a static position in the ring and long exchanges of blows. You need to constantly move, move away from the line of attack with side steps and attack after his misses. During training and sparring, be sure to use certified protective equipment, including individual caps, closed helmets and heavy gloves, and always take time to warm up your joints to prevent injuries during intense loads.
