Baghdad under attack – A rocket has hit the US embassy in the Iraqi capital. The incident took place in the government quarter of the city, known as the “Green Zone”, where diplomatic missions and government agencies are located.
According to security sources, the missile flew over a fortified area and fell on the territory of the American diplomatic compound. The impact fell on the helipad inside the embassy. After the explosion, thick smoke rose above the complex, which is visible in the video obtained by journalists.
The US embassy did not immediately provide official comments on the incident. However, the diplomatic mission had previously raised the threat level for Iraq to level four and warned citizens of possible attacks on American facilities and personnel.
Baghdad’s Green Zone is considered one of the most heavily guarded areas in the country. It is home to Iraq’s government buildings, international missions and major diplomatic complexes. However, the area has repeatedly been the target of rocket attacks and drone strikes attributed to groups linked to Iran.
Recently, such groups have intensified attacks on military bases and facilities where American and coalition forces are located. The day before, a French soldier serving as part of the international coalition was killed in a drone strike in northern Iraq.
The events in Baghdad come amid rising tensions in the Middle East, with experts saying further attacks on diplomatic and military targets could lead to a new round of escalation in the region.
