A Crisis That Starts Far Beyond the USA

Ольга ПетроваОльга Петрова—18.03.20260

The latest escalation in the Iran war has triggered a global energy shock, forcing the USA to take emergency action as oil and gas markets spiral into instability. At the center of the disruption is the South Pars gas field, one of the largest energy reserves in the world, shared between Iran and Qatar. Recent strikes on South Pars and nearby infrastructure have intensified fears of long-term supply shortages.

This field is not just another resource site — the south pars gas field is a cornerstone of global natural gas production. Any disruption there immediately affects LNG exports, especially those routed through key hubs like Ras Laffan in Qatar, one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas processing centers.

Why the USA Stepped In With Emergency Measures

In response to rising fuel prices and supply disruptions, the USA temporarily waived the century-old Jones Act, allowing foreign vessels to transport oil and gas between domestic ports.

This move is designed to ease logistical bottlenecks and improve the internal distribution of fuel across the country. With global shipping routes under threat and the Strait of Hormuz effectively disrupted, the US is trying to compensate by optimizing domestic transport.

However, analysts emphasize that this is a short-term fix. The real issue lies in global supply constraints, not just transportation inefficiencies.

South Pars and Ras Laffan: The Heart of the Global Gas System

The situation becomes even more critical when considering the relationship between South Pars and Ras Laffan. The gas extracted from the south pars gas field feeds directly into Qatar’s LNG infrastructure, much of which is processed and exported through Ras Laffan.

When instability hits this region, it doesn’t just affect the Middle East — it sends shockwaves through Europe, Asia, and the USA, all of which depend on stable gas supplies.

From an analytical standpoint, this highlights a structural vulnerability in the global energy system. A single geographic region holds disproportionate influence over supply, making it a high-risk نقطة for geopolitical conflict.

Oil Prices Surge, Gas Markets Follow

As tensions escalate, oil prices have surged toward $110 per barrel, with gas prices also climbing sharply.

The disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — a route that handles around 20% of global oil supply — has compounded the crisis.

For the USA, this translates directly into higher gasoline prices and inflationary pressure. Even with emergency measures, consumers are already feeling the impact, and further increases remain likely if the conflict continues.

Strategic Moves Beyond Shipping Laws

The Jones Act waiver is only one part of a broader US response. Washington is also:

– adjusting sanctions policies
– exploring alternative oil sources
– releasing strategic reserves

These actions aim to stabilize both oil and gas markets, but their effectiveness remains uncertain. Experts suggest that unless stability returns to regions like South Pars and Ras Laffan, price volatility will persist.

Analysis: A Fragile Energy Future

From a strategic perspective, the current crisis exposes how interconnected and fragile the global energy system has become. The USA, despite being a major energy producer, is still deeply affected by disruptions in distant regions like the south pars gas field.

In my view, this moment could accelerate long-term shifts in energy policy. The reliance on critical hubs such as Ras Laffan and South Pars makes diversification and energy independence more urgent than ever.

At the same time, the crisis demonstrates that geopolitical conflict is now one of the primary drivers of both oil and gas prices — often outweighing traditional supply-demand fundamentals.

Final Thought

The question is no longer just how the USA can stabilize fuel prices, but whether the global energy system itself can adapt to a world where key assets like South Pars and Ras Laffan are increasingly exposed to geopolitical risk.
