Ukrainian News June 24, 2026

Ольга ПетроваОльга Петрова—24.06.20260

Today, Ukraine is experiencing the 1582nd day of full-scale resistance to the Russian military invasion. The past day and the current day were marked by an unprecedented intensity of enemy attacks using strike drones on rear and frontline cities, as well as a critical tension of forces on the eastern front line. Despite the systemic pressure of the occupation troops, the Defense Forces hold strategic positions and inflict significant losses on the enemy in manpower and equipment. Read the main analytical materials and reports from the scene of events in the monitoring of the information portal 34.ua.

News 1: Repelling air aggression — air defense forces shot down 95 out of 101 enemy drones at night

On the night of June 24, 2026, Russian troops carried out one of the largest combined attacks in recent times, launching 101 strike drones of various types (including Shahed/Geran-2 UAVs) over Ukraine. The air alert lasted for several hours in most regions. Thanks to the high coordination of the Air Force, mobile fire groups and electronic warfare equipment, Ukrainian air defense managed to intercept and destroy 95 enemy air targets. The main strikes were repelled in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhia and central regions of the country.

Expert opinion (Sergiy Zvarych, military analyst, air defense specialist):

“Shooting 95 out of 101 drones is a phenomenal indicator of the effectiveness of our air defense system (over 94%), especially in conditions when the enemy is trying to maneuver trajectories and launch drones at ultra-low altitudes. Such a massiveness (over a hundred units per night) indicates that the enemy has stable supply channels and domestic production. Our mobile fire groups took the main blow, which allowed us to preserve the scarce long-range anti-aircraft missiles to repel possible missile attacks. However, even isolated breakthroughs, unfortunately, bring tragic consequences for civilians.”

News 2: Operational situation on the front — Pokrovsky direction remains the hottest, the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 44 attacks

According to the official morning report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a significant number of combat clashes took place on the contact line during the day. The highest activity of the invaders’ assault groups is recorded in the Pokrovsky direction, where Ukrainian defenders held back 44 attacks in the areas of the settlements of Bilytske, Dobropillya, Rodynske, Sergiyivka and Novooleksandrivka. At the same time, heavy defensive battles continue in the Kostyantynivka (20 attacks), Lymanske (16 attacks) and Slovianske (16 attacks) directions. During the day, aviation and missile troops of the Defense Forces struck 20 areas of concentration of enemy personnel. Total enemy losses during the day amounted to 1,260 people and 60 artillery systems.

Expert opinion (Mykhailo Zhirokhov, military historian and analyst):

“44 assaults on the Pokrovskaya direction alone clearly indicate where the Russian command has concentrated its main offensive fist of the summer campaign of 2026. They are trying to break through to the major logistical hubs of the Donetsk region, using the tactics of “meat assaults” with the support of the KABs. The extremely high enemy losses in artillery (60 systems per day) indicate high-intensity counter-battery combat on the part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Maintaining this line requires tremendous resilience from our brigades, but a strategic breakthrough of the enemy’s front has not been achieved.”

News 3: Terror against civilians — daytime attack on a cinema in Konotop and the tragedy in Balakliya

Russian forces continue to deliberately target civilian infrastructure. On the afternoon of June 24, an enemy drone attacked the very center of the city of Konotop in Sumy Oblast, hitting the building of the city’s Mir cinema. At the time of the strike, there were people inside and near the building, including children playing near a fountain. Two civilians are currently reported injured, one of whom is in serious condition.

Earlier, during a night attack on the Kharkiv region, one of the drones hit a residential area in Balakliya. The explosion killed a 56-year-old woman and destroyed 4 private houses and a local shop. In Zaporizhia, an enemy UAV attacked a gas station, causing a fire and destroying civilian cars.

Expert opinion (Olena Borsuk, lawyer, specialist in international humanitarian law):

“The strikes on a cinema in the city center in broad daylight and on residential buildings at night are direct, undisguised war crimes that have no military justification. The Mir cinema in Konotop or the gas station in Zaporizhia are exclusively civilian objects. The purpose of such attacks is to intimidate the population and destabilize the internal situation in the rear regions of Ukraine. The Prosecutor General’s Office has already documented these facts for transfer to the International Criminal Court. The world must increase sanctions pressure to block the supply of components for these killer drones.”

A quick look at other important events of the day

Technological development: The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine officially announced the completion of the annual cycle of the large-scale project “Smart Force Academy”. The program brought together about 200 leading Ukrainian defense companies to implement artificial intelligence and innovative solutions in the military command system.

Shelling of Zaporizhzhia region: Russian aircraft carried out four guided bomb strikes (GABs) on the village of Novomykolaivka and airstrikes on Kushugum. Three people were injured (men aged 66 and 38, as well as a 60-year-old woman), and significant damage was recorded to houses and power lines.

Economic front: tax authorities report stable budget performance in most rear areas for the first half of the summer, which allows for uninterrupted financing of direct purchases for the needs of the front from regional and municipal budgets.

Weather situation in the country

According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, on June 24, the weather in Ukraine was divided into two zones. On the Left Bank (including Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions), warm summer weather is maintained with temperatures of $+25\dots+29\text{ °C}$ , but with a high probability of local thunderstorms and gusty winds during the passage of fronts.

In the western and central regions, it is cloudy with clearings, temperatures are somewhat more comfortable – within +23-+26 ° C. The radiation background throughout the country remains stable and does not exceed natural norms.
